Travels in Vietnam (1996) 11/14

Coffins to go; choose your
model. Hoi An, central
Vietnam
Da Nang is an industrial city
about 30 miles north of Hoi
An, and was a major American
base during the Vietnam War.
I gave it a miss...
Highway One runs almost
the full length of Vietnam.
It is a narrow strip of
bitumen, completely
inadequate to its task
The promised 'big bus' from Hue
morphed into a van, hopelessly
overloaded and driven by a
maniac. The axle broke in the
middle of nowhere.
What a miserable spot to get
emergency repairs. Bleak,
wet and islolated ..
Traffic on Highway One has to
take a motorized punt at this
point
Hanoi. The city is built around
this pretty lake, and has an
entirely different feel from
the tropical sprawl of Saigon
Hanoi street in winter. The air
is chilly enough for coats
