Error Note !
Tapestry 3, on page 25 discusses summaries and paraphrases.
In the text's example for a 6 word sentence, it gives a 27 word "summary". This is nonsense!!! What the text example really gives is an explanation.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Summary: A short statement of the essential points or ideas in a longer text.
Paraphrase: The restatement of a word or expression, or an idea, in other words. Paraphrases have two main uses :
a) when somebody does not know a particular word, they may give a longer statement describing that word. This is common in language learning. This kind of paraphrase is also called a circumlocution.
b) Students are often asked to paraphrase some part of a text or research paper in their own words to show that they have understood the concept.

Exercise :
write a paraphrase⁄cirumlocution for the following words :
a watch ⁄ a bus ⁄ an airport ⁄ to throw ⁄ to dance
