Speaking Test & Listening Test ? December 2007

          reference: Thor May

          1. Procedure

          a) The students enters and selects a random topic number from 1 to 10 from a “lucky-dip” box of numbered cards.

          b) Recording begins

          c) The student speaks his⁄her class number and name clearly.

          d) With teacher encouragement to relax and talk naturally, the student speaks for three minutes on the selected topic. The presentation should be coherent, but memorized speech is discouraged.

          e) After three minutes the teacher turns off the recorder. The student should be able to talk for this long, but need not logically “complete” their talk within this time. It does not matter if they do not cover the topic. The topic is merely a cue to speak.

          2. The teacher speaks ten pairs of sentences. The first sentence in each pair is incomplete. Students complete the missing segments with any good English that is coherent with the sense of both sentences.

          3. The first sentence in each pair is taken from material familiar to students from the course. The second sentence is new to the students, but relates in an obvious way to the first sentence.

          4. The marking scheme : one mark is given for accurately taking the dictation of the sentences, and one mark for completing the first sentence with good English which is coherent in the context.

          5. Example :

He doesn’t know how to _____________________ . He is going to be late.

          a) [good answer] get to work on time

          b) [bad answer] * open the bottle of sauce
