Ahem, every family claims one ... the ilustrious ancestor.. Here, General John Pemberton. TM's paternal grandmother, Ruby May, nee Pemberton, reckoned he tied in. I can't verify it.. What the hell. Anyway, Rubys grandfather arrived from America sometime in the mid-nieteenth Century.

As for General Pemberton, after a long career in the US Cavalry, he resigned and joined the Confederate army. He lost the siege of Vicksburg in 1863 to Ulysses S. Grant, so wound up unpopular in both the North and the South. Here is a link to his story: The Man Who Surrendered Vicksburg
